It is reported that graphite has many physical and chemical properties, such as high temperature resistance, high thermal conductivity and conductivity, thermal shock resistance, flame resistance, high compressive strength, high corrosion resistance, low friction and self-lubrication. It is mainly used in coatings, powder metallurgy, steel making, refractory materials, lubricants and batteries. It is also used in large fuel cells, batteries and lightweight high-strength composites. By 2022, China's graphite output accounted for more than 60% of the global output.
According to Frost Sullivan's report, due to the impact of environmental regulations on graphite resource exploitation, China's domestic natural graphite production decreased from about 780000 tons in 2016 to 625000 tons in 2017, and then rebounded steadily to 700000 tons in 2019 driven by the demand of lithium battery and steelmaking industry.
In the future, the demand for refractories, lubricants and lithium-ion batteries will increase day by day. Domestic natural graphite production is expected to increase from 719600 tons in 2021 to 907600 tons in 2025, with a CAGR of about 6%.
